 When I first connected with Alex Tanaka, I wasn’t just curious about his job title. I wanted to know how someone could take a technical career in coding, content management, and SEO, and turn it into something that genuinely helps people. Alex is the Manager of Web Development at the Spondylitis Association of America, a nonprofit that supports people living with spondyloarthritis. Talking to him reminded me that technology isn’t only about startups, apps, or corporate IT—it can also be a tool for empathy and impact. Alex has been working in tech for over 20 years and has worn many hats throughout his career. He has worked as a front-end developer, project leader, and entrepreneur.       This week was very busy, with many assignments for both CST 300 and CST 349. Even though the workload was heavy, I was able to learn some new and interesting things that made the week worthwhile. One of the main topics I explored was ethics in my future career . I learned how important it is to think critically about ethical issues and how to use ethical frameworks when making arguments about ethics. This made me reflect more seriously about the responsibilities that come with working in computer science, especially in areas like artificial intelligence.      I also feel a little more confident about my future career path. Through these classes, I am beginning to figure out what I need to improve in my study strategy. One change I want to make is finding an appropriate place to study so I can stay more focused.      This is the second week of my learning journal, and it has been another meaningful step in my journey.      The first thing I explored was how to study more effectively. I learned about different study skills and realized that I am already strong in scheduling, time management, and critical thinking. This probably comes from my experience taking many online courses during college, which helped me develop discipline and a routine for managing my time wisely.      At the same time, I also noticed some of my weaknesses. For example, I struggle with choosing the right place to study. I cannot focus everywhere and usually need a private, quiet, and isolated space to concentrate. Another bad habit of mine is reading aloud while studying, which sometimes slows me down, and skipping note-taking during lectures, which makes it harder to review later.   Week 1 – The Beginning of My Computer Science Journey This is officially my first week as a Computer Science student, and wow… it has already been quite the experience. I’ve been learning a lot of new things in just a few days. Some of it feels exciting, some of it feels overwhelming, but overall it’s the start of something I’ve been looking forward to for a long time. One of my first tasks was to do my own research about the industry I’m interested in. It opened my eyes to how broad the tech world really is—there are so many directions to explore: software engineering, AI, data science, cybersecurity, and more.
